What is Smoking?

Smoking is the practice of burning tobacco and inhaling the smoke, this includes non-inhalation of the smoke, as is done by some with tobacco pipes and cigars. Tobacco smoke includes chemicals that are harmful to smokers and non-smokers alike.

There are huge amounts chemicals in tobacco smoke, over 7,000, more than 200 of which are harmful, including hydrogen cyanidecarbon monoxide, and ammonia.

Smoking has been shown to kill one in two lifelong smokers. The most common diseases caused by smoking are cancer of the lung, other lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, coronary heart disease and stroke.


Why is quitting smoking important?

Around half of smokers die early from smoking-related diseases, including heart diseaselung cancer and chronic bronchitis. The earlier you quit smoking the greater the impact, quitting at 30 can add 10 years to your life!

In other words, it’s never too late to benefit from stopping. Stopping smoking has wide reaching impact on all areas of your day to day life, not just your lung health. Within 2-12 weeks of stopping smoking your blood circulation improves, this makes all physical activity much easier. You will also give a boost to your immune system, making it easier to fight off colds and flu. Quitting can also lead to better sex and improves fertility and improves the chances of giving birth to a healthy baby.


Stopping smoking improves smell and taste, slows the ageing process and have whiter teeth and better breath. By stopping smoking, you’ll be protecting the health of not only yourself but your non-smoking friends and family, too.

Breathing in smoke increases the risk of lung cancerheart disease and stroke. In children it doubles the risk of getting chest illnesses, including pneumonia, ear infections, wheezing and asthma.

You usually go for a few weeks and work towards a quit date.
